Fleeing criminal suspect caught by police dog

Many police departments in the Orlando area use highly trained dogs to assist them in their work. Most of these police dogs are deployed for using their acute olfactory abilities to find hidden drugs and other contraband. Occasionally, however, these K-9s are used to help capture fleeing suspects. In a recent incident near Ocala, a police dog used his speed to catch a man suspected of a number of criminal charges in a foot chase that followed a car chase.

A property crimes detective was attempting to arrest the suspect pursuant to a felony arrest warrant. The suspect was staying at a relative's home when the deputy found him. The suspect fled the scene in an automobile that police say had been stolen from a relative. The suspect ultimately returned to his relatives' home, where police found him. When police attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly tried to escape on foot.

Police and the dog gave chase. Police allege that videos from body cams and dash cams show the dog leaping onto the suspect and biting him in his right triceps. The man fell to the ground yelling in pain. Police then called off the dog and handcuffed the suspect. According to police, the suspect told them that he had been attempting to take a shot of heroin during the chase. Police all allege that the suspect told them that he was "on drugs" and did not know what he was doing. The suspect was charged with fleeing and eluding police, resisting arrest, possession of heroin and driving with a suspended license. He was also charged with felonies from an event earlier in November, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft auto and resisting arrest. The suspect was also served with outstanding Marion County arrest warrants for grand theft, fraud, grand theft auto and two counts of burglary.

The suspect in this case did not help himself by reportedly attempting to elude the police. He may, however, be of considerably more help to himself by consulting a knowledgeable criminal defense attorney. A capable defense lawyer can analyze the evidence, suggest potential defenses and potentially negotiate a favorable plea agreement, if the facts justify such an outcome.
