Surveillance video leads to arrest of alleged hit-and-run driver

The widespread use of surveillance video cameras in commercial establishments in Central Florida often provides clues that help police arrest suspected thieves and hit-and-run drivers. The suspect in a recent hit-and-run accident in Titusville was identified because police were able to use an anonymous tip in conjunction with surveillance video to identify and locate the suspect.

The incident began when the suspect allegedly struck a girl who was riding a bicycle near a Titusville gas station. As witnesses began to gather around the victim, the driver was seen in the crowd that was checking on the girl's welfare. The driver waited only a few seconds before witnesses saw him get into his car and leave the scene. One of the witnesses called 911 and reported the incident. The caller described the car as a blue convertible with a tan roof, but the license number was not visible.

Police reviewed surveillance footage from the gas station and a nearby store and found a car matching the witness's description on the tape. Police posted the picture on social media, and a local TV station publicized the photo. The exposure resulted in an anonymous tip to police identifying the driver and his place of residence. Police found the blue car in the suspect's driveway with a cracked driver's side headlight and scratches, indications of contact with a bicycle. The suspect turned out to have a prior license suspension and was not able to drive legally. His criminal history showed that he had been arrested six times in the last five years for drugs and a DUI. The man was taken into custody and charged with driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident. The girl on the bicycle apparently did not suffer any serious injury.

Leaving the scene of an accident is never a wise idea. The suspect in this case is facing serious criminal charges that could result in incarceration, a significant fine and severe restriction of his driving privileges. Anyone facing similar charges may benefit from consulting an experienced criminal defense attorney for an evaluation of the case and assistance with negotiating a favorable plea agreement.
